A British man experienced years of shame when, to his horror, he sprouted a womanly breast on one side of his chest.

Farshad Hashemzadeh, 28, opened up about his experience with gynecomastia, which affects many men during some point in their lives, often during adolescence or old age. Hashemzadeh, however, had a particularly extreme case.

The slim, muscular car parts salesman from North London first started noticing his right breast developing at the age of 18, and didn't know what was going on.

“I couldn’t understand why it was happening to me. It just kept growing and growing and I became very withdrawn," Hashemzadeh told The Sun.

“I didn’t want anyone to see it. It was literally like having a woman’s boob. I am sure any man can appreciate how distressing this would be and how it could totally ruin your life. I had no confidence whatsoever.”

Gynecomastia, the enlargement of breast tissue in males, often results from an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. It can occur on one or both sides of the chest - and in Hashemzadeh's case, left him embarrassingly lopsided.

“It was incredibly embarrassing for me. I could never take off my T-shirt, I couldn’t go swimming," he said. “I couldn’t go to the gym and even in very hot weather I’d wrap up in (sweaters) to try to hide it.”

Gynecomastia can be treated with medication, but the pills given to Hashemzadeh by his doctor stopped working over time, he said. By the time he was 28, his right breast had grown into a full B-cup.

Hashemzadeh looked into getting the breast removed, but Britain's National Health Service wouldn't cover the cost because he is a man.

“I was very frustrated. The NHS can give women boob jobs. They remove tattoos and carry out weight-loss surgery but they would not do this operation for me," Hashemzadeh told The Sun.

Hashemzadeh became so severely depressed that he took a knife to his chest, trying to slice his breast away. He was referred to a psychiatrist, but even then could not get insurance to pay for his operation.

He and his girlfriend eventually turned to family to borrow the money he needed to get his life back on track. The operation was conducted successfully and left only a small scar.

About half the male population suffers from gynecomastia "to a degree," Hashemzadeh's surgeon, Dr. Azhar Aslam, told The Sun.

Hashemzadeh said the procedure was "worth every penny" of the nearly $5,000 he had to pay.

“I no longer feel the deep depression I did when I had to try to cut it away myself," he said. “My relationship with my girlfriend is back on track, too. She has been so supportive.

"Once the scar has properly healed, I will feel like a man again. I only hope it doesn’t come back.”
