The Missing Link? Cold Showers: upregulate your Opioid receptors (self.NoFap)

submitted 10 hours ago by backtothebeginning114 days

I stumbled upon a little gem of wisdom when trying to escape from the binge trap yesterday. Taking regular cold showers has been shown to increase the density of opioid receptor density in rats. (also here.)

It has been commented numerous times before on this subreddit that cold showers, for some reason, seem to help with the challenge of NoFap. I know a lot of the discussion on here tends to focus on dopamine (and rightly so), but what is perhaps overlooked is the fact that orgasm floods the brain with your bodies natural opioids. You know, the same neurotransmitter that makes heroin the greatest high of them all.

I think this might be the missing link for many people, including myself. The feeling of stepping out of a cold shower is quite unlike anything else. And we all know how, for many people struggling for years with this addiction, fapping is a source of stress relief, of escape, of pain relief. And I believe this could be inextricably linked to the opioid effect of masturbation.

This debate far predates any of us alive today:

Humans used to spend a lot more time outside–and we were continually exposed to great variations in climate, humidity and weather. And, there were occasions we would be submerged in different waters of various temperatures too. Old-time naturopathy finds some of its healing roots here. Hydrotherapy has actually been in use since ancient times as a way to balance the body and mind. According to Hippocrates, water therapy ‘allays lassitude’ (physical or mental weakness). Later one, German water cure from the 1800’s often used various applications to help treat disease (Barry and Lewis, 2006).”

Gary Wilson over at Your Brain on Porn has expressed before that Pornography addiction is much more than just dopamine and he has expressed remorse over the fact that other neurotransmitters are often overlooked (Delta FosB's role in reinforcing the addiction pathways, for example).

Personally I have noticed that Codeine and other mild opioid increasing drugs tend to have a better anti-anxiety effect for me than traditional benzodiazepines (that's not to say that popping a xanax won't help!)

Of course you can argue that cold showers work so well because they simply practice your discipline, but as those of us who have battled this addiction for years know, willpower and discipline are often simply not enough to prevent a relapse. I think opioid receptor downregulation could be an additional stumbling block for many of us, myself included, and the overwhelming anecdotal reports of cold showers being a real help on this subreddit only confirm this.

So my conclusion is thus: along with lifting weights to increase dopamine receptor density, and meditation to strengthen the prefrontal cortex, cold showers could be the final missing link that can help numb the pain you feel in response to life's pressures and alleviate depression. These are POSITIVE STEPS you can begin doing RIGHT NOW to ensure success. This addiction does not have to be a purely reactive one. You can be PROACTIVE.

How bad do you want it?

Yeah, weightlifting, meditation, and cold showers are key.

In my opinion, we should really just start referring to nofap as asceticism. That's what it is. It's the ancient knowledge and practice that doing things that are difficult/painful/unpleasant make you stronger and happier. Doing thing that are pleasurable make you weaker and unhappy.

Norepinephrine but not hypoxia stimulates HIF-1alpha gene expression in brown adipocytes.

Abstract

The cellular response to hypoxic stress is mainly mediated via activation of the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha). In the present study, the sympathetically controlled brown adipose tissue was used to investigate the effect of norepinephrine on HIF-1alpha gene expression. Norepinephrine increased HIF-1alpha mRNA levels in cultured brown adipocytes, whereas the hypoxia-mimic cobalt was without effect. Cold exposure of mice increased HIF-1alpha gene expression in brown adipose tissue. In UCP1-ablated mice, which are incapable of inducing thermogenic oxygen consumption in brown adipose tissue, cold exposure generated a significantly higher elevation of HIF-1alpha mRNA levels than in wild-type. These results demonstrate that cold-induced HIF-1alpha gene expression is independent of thermogenic oxygen consumption leading to hypoxia, but is consistent with a norepinephrine regulation of HIF-1alpha gene expression. Thus, by elevating HIF-1alpha gene expression, norepinephrine may mediate an increased potential to respond to hypoxia in brown adipose tissue and possibly in other tissues.
