Five (Scientific) Reasons to Take Cold Showers (self.NoFap)

Like so many people in NoFap, I've integrated cold shower therapy into my plans for not fapping. I was getting sick of watching videos about cold showers where the arguments boiled down to "hey, it's good for you!" without actually giving you any of the science, so rather than ask you guys for it, I decided I'd instead dig it up myself and deliver it to the NoFap community.

Here are a few interesting studies on cold exposure I found:

1. Improves how your body reacts to stress. In a 2008 study, it was discovered that women repeatedly exposed to cold water for 20 seconds at a time had lower levels of cortisol after a few months of habitual exposure. Cortisol helps your body react to stress, but in modern times chronically high levels of the hormone can actually be damaging. This suggests that cold water exposure may help your hormones change in a way. The practical result is that the "volume" is turned down on the stress in your life.

2. Anti-oxidative properties. Exposure to oxidative stress (winter swimming) was found to have anti-oxidative results in 1999.

3. Better weight control--at least in rats. There's a theory that cold exposure helps you build up brown adipose tissue(BAT), but the science seems pretty young on that. (There is, however, this 2012 comment that cold exposure can help essentially turn on BAT) Source. But one study on rats found that rats exposed to cold got leaner while eating more calories. Woohoo!

4. Increased adiponectin levels. Found in 2009. Low adiponectin levels have been found in the obese and may help with insulin sensitivity, which helps prevent diabetes and weight gain.

5. Cold burns energy, which means you're burning calories from heat production despite not exercising. source. What's more, most of the energy for this heat comes from fat.

A few hypotheses have been thrown out there without much study as of yet:

Legal essa do banho, tomo banho de ducha gelado uma vez ao dia.

Tomo com os braços abertos e nunca os cruzo, vc cruza os braços quando sente frio.

Mexe com o psicologico, é tipo superação, com o tempo vai ficando mais facil
